Personality:

TRIGGER WARNING: There will be mentions of death, suicide, murder, kidnapping, drugs, and a lot of other sensitive subjects in this section. Please read at your own risk.

Max's outward appearance suggests that of a shy, socially awkward young lady. She's very quiet in class and while she talks to people, she tends to have trouble making actual meaningful relationships with others. She's teased and bullied a lot because she's such a quiet girl, but there is no doubt that she's got a lot of heart and a lot of talent ... despite her grades in her general education classes not being so great. (It's actually thought that she might have learning disabilities or other developmental issues, but this is just a hypothesis and is not confirmed at all.)

When she does manage to talk to people, she does whatever she can to make sure that the encounter is friendly. It doesn't always work, sadly, because ... let's face it. High Schoolers are pretty awful. She tries, though. She does make a few friends at school that she is somewhat closer to, Warren Graham and Kate Marsh being among those, but her relationship with them does not even begin to compare with the closeness she has with her best friend, Chloe.

Max is a pretty well-grounded person for the most part. She shows very early on that she has a lot of insecurities and is not wholly confident in herself or her abilities. After meeting up with Chloe again (or even reading her diary before she meets up with her again), it's also discovered that she has a bit of a guilt complex - especially when it comes to her best friend. Her family moved away from Arcadia Bay to go to Seattle right after a significantly bad event in Chloe's life, and Max didn't do a very good job of keeping in touch over the five years that they were apart. Fortunately, that relationship was salvaged pretty quickly. The guilt complex, however, only grows bigger as the game continues on.

After discovering her abilities to rewind time, Max tries to take it upon herself to help her fellow people, to be an actual "Everyday Hero." Sadly, as we realize later on, her attempts to help only make things worse most of the time, and every time something happens that she feels she could have done something about, she feels more and more guilty. Her guilt complex hits an all-time low especially after the suicide of her friend and classmate Kate Marsh, in which Max tried to save her life and failed. In addition, Max has had to see her best friend Chloe killed several times in front of her, and has rewound time often in order to keep her alive. Unfortunately ... saving her so often is what leads to putting the entirety of Arcadia Bay at risk of a mass death by way of tornado-induced apocalypse.

You may notice already just how often I mention Chloe. There's a reason for that. Max has a very one-track mind when it comes to her, and it becomes even moreso as the events of the game progress. She even says herself at some point, after altering time and ultimately being chosen to go to San Francisco to see her work in an Art Gallery, that Chloe comes first. Even with faced with an opportunity to better herself and progress in her career of choice, she will always put Chloe before herself, or anyone. Chloe is incredibly important to her, and Max will stop at nothing to keep her safe. And again ... it is sadly this desire to continue to keep Chloe safe that causes disaster to her hometown.

Outside of this, though, Max is shown to become a little more confident in herself due to her time abilities, before that confidence comes crashing down again with the finale of the game being what it was. She's also a giant nerd. She makes horrible puns. It's insinuated that she plays World of Warcraft. She knows how to play guitar. She's very much into literature, and is a complete vintage camera whore.

The remainder of this personality section is going to be speculation based on what happened in the timeline that I am bringing Max in from. I will do my best to explain exactly why I believe this is true for her, though, with events from the game.

As the game goes on, Max gets mixed up in a lot of things that give her a lot more emotional problems than just a heavy guilt complex (though that also gets worse) and a lot of insecurities. Max also has feelings of inadequacy that start with her own horrible self-confidence, and go right into feeling that she'd been replaced by Chloe with Rachel Amber. She's shown times in the game where, while she was happy that Rachel was there for Chloe when she wasn't able to be, she was also jealous of how close Rachel and Chloe had been. Still, she did everything she could to help Chloe find what had happened to Rachel, because Chloe's happiness comes before anything ... plus, she couldn't in good conscience just leave someone innocent missing like that. Still, she believes for much of the game that she doesn't stand up to the kind of person Rachel was for Chloe, and feels really bad about not keeping in contact with her best friend for as long as she did.

It is also my belief that Max has PTSD due to things that happened in the game. Between seeing Kate jump off the roof of the girls' dormitories right in front of her, seeing Chloe shot and killed so many times, and being drugged by someone she trusted, kidnapped, tied up, and having had suggestive pictures taken of her ... and then having to watch her city at the mercy of a giant, town-eating tornado, and then to have to make the impossible decision to sacrifice her best friend to save the city ... yeah, there's just no way I can see her getting away from all of this without any PTSD at all.

She has a really major nightmare right before the end of the game that includes so many of her fears. In it, she has to face the idea of her own death, and she has to hear many of the people she met over the last week say horrible things about her. She had to hear Chloe say horrible things about her. The events of the game have seriously messed this girl up, and there is absolutely no way she is going to be even remotely all right for a long time. Max is a strong girl, though. Despite this, she tends to at least be able to make others believe that she's able to lead a completely normal life. Max has a tendency to focus on the well-being of others more than herself, so the only way she tends to get any of her emotions off her chest is by writing in her diary. Otherwise, she bottles things up until she absolutely can't keep it in anymore. The only person she felt she could freely talk to about any of her feelings in her world is now dead, so ... she's absolutely not as open with anyone or anything else aside from her diary.

There will undoubtedly be things happening in the castle that will completely break her down, which is why I wanted to go into the emotional issues that were likely caused by the events of her story.

Powers/Abilities:
Photography: As an up and coming photographer, Max always has her camera on her, and is always looking for good opportunities for a picture. She is also prone to taking selfies. Lots and lots of selfies.

Time Powers: This is an ability that Max no longer actually has access to, but it is still worth a mention because it's such a huge deal in her entire game. Throughout the game, Max has the ability to rewind time. After rewinding time, she still keeps any information that she learned before rewinding, and if she is standing in a different place than she was when she first rewound, she stays in the place she was in upon starting the new rewind. Max has also shown that she has the ability to travel back in time via photographs. She focuses extremely hard on the photograph until she is focused on it enough to actually travel back in time. If she is successful, she is still her normal self, if only in her head. When rewinding, she is the only one who remembers what happens before the rewind. Again, this is an ability she no longer has access to, as the ability was triggered when she attempted to save Chloe from her death in the beginning of the game. Having gone back and sacrificed Chloe to save Arcadia Bay, she does not have this ability at all anymore and will not have it at all in the Castle.
